Jess Bowen
Owner / Operator

Having first established her Mudhoney brand in Balmain in 2007, Jess Bowen has owned and operated five salons throughout Australia. She is proud to bring Mudhoney to her home town of Bangalow, where her salon design was a finalist in the Best Salon Design Australia / New Zealand awards. A key feature of this beautiful premises is that on a sunny day, clients can have their hair done outside on the verandah, where the beautiful stained-glass windows from the neighbouring church reflect onto the salon mirrors.

Where did the name Mudhoney come from?
“Mudhoney is a Seattle rock band and I like the juxtaposition of mud and honey.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“I styled Rammstein for a New York gig at Madison Square Garden.”
What’s the best piece of advice you have received?
“Keep things simple.”

 

Clare Moriarty
Hairstylist and Makeup Artist
With seven years’ experience in the beauty industry, Clare has been with Mudhoney for two years.
“I love that this job can take me all over the world. Every day is genuinely different and allows me to be creative. I love interacting with a diverse range of people and the excitement that comes with personal transformation.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“Jerry Hall, I did her hair at Melbourne fashion week a few years ago. I’m obsessed with 70s hair and she was such an icon.”
What is your favourite smell?
“I have a scented candle hobby / obsession, so I’d say some of my favourite smells would include sandalwood, bergamot, vetiver.”

 

Bec Rose
Senior Stylist and Manager
Bec specialises in lived-in colour, low-maintenance styles and improving the quality of hair. She has been with Mudhoney for three-and-a-half years with a total of 17 years of industry experience.
“I have built a large clientele in the Northern Rivers who are exceptionally loyal, this is something I am very proud of. I constantly strive to educate my clients so they can achieve salon-quality hair at home.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“I gave Elle Macpherson a blow-dry when I was an apprentice, I was so nervous I went bright red!”
What would you do at work if you could get away with it?
“I would come into work in track pants and slippers every day, sorry Jess!”

 

Zoe Zee Pickles
Senior Stylist and Colourist

Zoe has been part of the Mudhoney tribe for one year and specialises in blondes, dry-cutting and short lady’s cuts. She has 15 years of industry experience.
“One of my greatest achievements was winning the WELLA Trend Vision competition in Victoria.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“Margot Robbie, I styled her hair once in Melbourne.”
What is your favourite smell?
“Coco Chanel perfume, it reminds me of watching my mum getting ready and doing her hair and makeup, she was also a hairdresser.”

 

Grace Bourke
Hairstylist and Makeup Artist

Grace completed her L’Oréal colour degree in London. She has 17 years of industry experience, two of those with Mudhoney.
“I love to stay current and up-to-date with progression of hair by updating my skills regularly through education.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“Two completely different characters, Bill Shorten and Magda Szubanski.”
What is something your friends consider ‘so you?’
“I’m known to be very OCD with my foiling, it almost looks like origami.”

 

Shell Whyatt
Receptionist

Shell is the delightful voice and smiling face welcoming clients to Mudhoney, she has been its receptionist for six months.
“I love that my position keeps me busy.”
What is the most interesting place you have been?
“Nusa Lembongan Island in Indonesia, I enjoyed the culture difference.”
What is your favourite smell?
“Fresh-cut grass and rain, there is something very grounding and peaceful about this.”

 

Anita Bauer
Senior Hairstylist and Kerestase Ambassador

Anita is in her 10th year of hairdressing and has been with the talented team at Mudhoney for over two years. Her career has allowed her to work in the fashion industry at Australian and Melbourne Fashion Weeks, as well as runway shows for Myer Melbourne.
“I am a haircutting specialist with an affinity for freehand dry cutting, creating effortless and easy to maintain hair. I have a strong following of people that embrace their natural texture and am the go to girl for all wavy to curly hair types.”
Who is the most interesting or famous person you have styled?
“If I had to pick my favourite famous person, Guy Pearce by far! He is one humble, down-to-earth, charismatic human.”
What is something your friends consider ‘so you?’
“My cheeky light-hearted playfulness and my love for indoor plants and flamingoes.”
